It’s amazing to see that today’s machinists, programmers and CNC technicians are getting better and better at multi-axis programming, three dimensional contouring and managing advanced machine accessories and attachments. At the same time it’s disheartening that they sometimes lack basic mathematical skills. The common perception is that, in this age of advanced computing techniques, the concepts of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, multiplication tables and mensuration are no longer relevant. Although some of this thought process is logical because almost everyone has calculators, smart phones, and tablets at their disposal, but there are a number of situations on the shop floor where the knowledge of these mathematical tools comes in handy and saves a lot of time and money.
